Joshua Clover
The DE in Critical Theory at UC Davis mourns the loss of Professor Joshua Clover (English, Comparative Literature). Joshua’s contributions to the program in Critical Theory and to critical discourses, education, and activism on our campus were immense. Joshua was a dynamic teacher who introduced countless Davis students to the study of critical theory, approached not as an abstract set of ideas, but as a potential tool for understanding contemporary culture and responding to urgent political conflicts. His seminar on Capital introduced a generation of young scholars to Marx and Marxist thought. but his theoretical range extended much further. In recent years, he taught courses on Frantz Fanon, critical logistics studies and theories of ecological crisis, among many other topics. He was a generous, expansive and stimulating interlocutor, and we will miss him terribly.
