CRI 200A Approaches to Critical Theory

Course Description: This course will take us on a run (cursus) through a number of important topics and texts in critical theory and cultural studies. Contemporary and late twentieth century works will be placed in conversation with earlier theorists and philosophers, especially Marx, Freud and Heidegger, in ways that critique, expand, invert or bypass these sources. Special attention will be paid throughout to structures and experiences of domination, exploitation and violence, to forms of contestation and resistance, and to conceptual work that, in the face of such forces, strives for diagnosis, comprehension, undoing, reconfiguration, futurity, or exit, as the case(s) may be.
